How the distance is calculated
The figure shown is the great-circle distance — the shortest path between two points on the surface of the Earth, measured along a curve rather than a straight line on a flat map. It is calculated from each airport's latitude and longitude using the haversine formula, treating the Earth as a sphere with a radius of 6,371 km.
Actual flown distance is usually slightly longer. Aircraft follow published airways, avoid restricted airspace, and route around weather, so a real flight track rarely matches the theoretical shortest path exactly.
The estimated flight time assumes typical jet cruise speed plus roughly 30 minutes for taxi, take-off, climb, descent and landing. Shorter flights spend proportionally more time climbing and descending, so their average speed is lower. Head- and tailwinds are not accounted for, which is why an eastbound transatlantic flight is often noticeably quicker than the same route westbound.
